We continued to assist Ukrainian displaced persons living in Slovakia. We conducted in-depth interviews with over a hundred of them about their life situation as part of Protection Profiling and Monitoring. We personally provided legal advice to 10 488 people in Bratislava and Košice. Thanks in part to HRL advocacy, temporary protection holders in Slovakia can now do business and more easily obtain temporary residence for employment purposes. Get a monthly digest of updates in migration and asylum directly to your email. Subscribe to our newsletter (available in Slovak language as of now).
In the Integration Center of the Košice Region, we helped 28 families find housing. We operate in the center together with the organizations People in Peril and Mareena, and together we contribute to the integration of foreigners into daily life in the Košice region and its surroundings. More information about the Integration Center can be found at this link.
The Human Rights League assisted victims of crime with access to legal, psychological, and social services. We continued to provide accredited assistance, with all assistance for victims of crime provided free of charge.
We helped ten people of foreign origin obtain asylum in Slovakia. The most common country of their origin was Belarus. Asylum proceedings are not easy, but with our guidance and legal assistance, we help applicants manage them.
We published a mapping study on temporary protection in the conditions of the Slovak Republic. Our goal was to map the conditions and standards of providing temporary protection to people fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the context of the activation of the Temporary Protection Directive, as well as the scope of individual rights accruing to persons granted temporary protection in Slovakia. The publication in Slovak language is available here.
On the Telegram channel, our team answered more than 3 400 questions. We helped over a thousand Ukrainians by phone and provided 886 consultations via email. We also assisted the community at information meetings in Bratislava, Košice and Trnava, which were attended by 264 people last year. We regularly provide information on all important matters on the HRL's Telegram channel.
We organized another year of the Integration Forum, where we discussed aid to Ukraine, irregular migration, and the protection of children's rights. The HRL Program Director, Miroslava Mittelmannová, emphasized the importance of an active civil society and highlighted the opportunity to draw on experience from abroad. "Through expert, factual, and cultivated discussion, we tried to discuss a vision for the future. We also pointed to the serious activity of organized groups and warned that it is necessary not only to help, but also to be cautious in our own work," said our Program Director. We thank our partners Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Slovakia, PICUM (Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants), and innixus for their support of the event.
We are able to assist people in need thanks to the financial assistance of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and other partner organizations. We also rely heavily on your help.
