Building Victim-Centered, Trauma-Informed Criminal Justice System Capacities in Slovakia

In partnership with Johns Hopkins University SAIS (School of Advanced International Studies) in Bologna, the Human Rights League is providing support in building victim-centered, trauma-informed criminal justice system capacities in Slovakia.

Building on our previous experiences investigating war crimes and advocating for the rights of human trafficking victims, with a focus on legal aid, this initiative is responding to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The HRL has been assisting in setting up systems to trace and identify potential victims and witnesses of crimes, as well as creating a comprehensive system of inter-agency cooperation in Slovakia, drawing on our previous experience working with specific vulnerable victims and witnesses of crime - foreign nationals.

The first training seminar within the project took place in November 2024, aiming to strengthen the ability of Slovak criminal justice authorities to effectively investigate human trafficking and war crimes committed in Ukraine, emphasizing victim-centered approaches to these serious crimes. Participants gained expertise from experts in the fields of police, prosecution, civil society and academia.

Project Duration: Fall 2024 - February 2025

The project includes:

  • a multi-day training seminar,
  • mentoring, counseling and consultations,
  • additional educational events and trainings.

The project is supported by the U.S. Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.
